An imam was killed after he became tangled in a rope attached to a launch in Sadarghat of the capital on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Kayum, 55, son of late Halim Munshi, hailing from Paschim Holy Durgapur village in Fardiganj upazila of Chandpur.
Masood, son-in-law of Kayum, said the he came from Chandpur to visit his daughter’s house in Dhaka a week ago. On Friday night, Kayum along with his daughter and grandchildren went to the Sadarghat launch terminal to return home. At around 11:30 pm, a staff of ‘Zamzam’ launch threw a rope toward terminal as the water vehicle was approaching there to allow passenger to get down. But, unfortunately the rope tangled Kayum, leaving him seriously injured.
He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition where duty doctor pronounced him dead.
ASI Abdul Khan, in-charge of DMCH police outpost, said that the body was kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy.
